2. Weather Forecast Vocabulary

1 Words to describe the rain. These words indicate how heavy the rain will be from 1 to 5 (5 being the heaviest).

  • (1) yaya tsuyoi ame (moderate rain)
    Take care as there will be a lot of rainfall over a long period of time.
  • (2) tsuyoi ame (strong rain)
    Rivers and drains will overflow and some roads will become flooded. Minor landslides can occur.
  • (3) hageshii ame (very heavy rain)
    Landslides can occur and cliffs can collapse.
  • (4) hijoni hageshii ame (extremely heavy rain)
    Water will overflow from manholes and mudslides can block roads in mountainous areas.
  • (5) moretsuna ame (intense rain)
    There is a high risk of disaster occuring, so strict caution is needed.

2. Words to describe the wind. These words indicate how strong the wind will be on a scale of 1 to 4.

  • (1) yaya tsuyoi kaze (fairly strong wind)
    Unsecured signs will be blown away.
  • (2) tsuyoi kaze (strong wind)
    It will be difficult to walk against the wind.
  • (3) hijoni tsuyoi kaze (extremely strong wind)
    The wind may cause you to lose your balance.
  • (4) moretsuna kaze (intense wind)
    You will have difficulty standing up. Block-walls and rooftops of houses will be damaged by the wind.

3 "Advisory" and "Warning"

chuiho Advisories are issued when there is a risk of natural disaster.
keiho Warnings are issued when there is a severe threat from a natural disaster.

If there is a warning issued regarding strong wind and heavy rain, it means the rain and wind are stronger than advisory level.

Advisories and warnings are issued for the following circumstances oame (heavy rain), kozui (flooding), bofu (gale force winds), bofu-u (gale force wind and rain), kaminari (thunder), naga ame (long period of rain).

For example a "Heavy Rain Advisory" or "Heavy Rain and Flood Warning".

  • hinan junbi joho "Be Prepared to Evacuate" Be prepared to evacuate at any moment. If you feel unsafe, you can evacuate before the reccommendation is issued.
  • hinan kankoku "Evacuation Reccommendation" Start to evacuate and move to the evacuation area.
  • hinan shiji "Evacuation Order"Go immediately to the evacuation area.
